Delaware, Alaska get federal aid

WASHINGTON, Nov. 16 (UPI) -- President George Bush declared major weather-related disasters in Delaware and Alaska Tuesday, freeing up federal aid to supplement recovery efforts.

The White House said federal funding would be made available to state and eligible local governments and certain private non-profit organizations on a cost-sharing basis for the repair or replacement of facilities damaged by storms, tornadoes and flooding in New Castle County, Del., resulting from Hurricane Jeanne in late September and early October.

Funds would also be made available for damage from a severe winter storm, tidal surges and flooding in Alaska's Bering Strait Regional Education Area and the Northwest Arctic Borough on Oct. 18-20.

Federal monies would also be made available on a cost-sharing basis statewide for hazard mitigation efforts in Delaware and in affected areas of Alaska, including the city of Mekoryuk.
