Jordan, Iraq agree to boost cooperation

AMMAN, Jordan, Nov. 3 (UPI) -- Jordan and Iraq agreed Wednesday to form 10 joint committees to boost cooperation in several economic, political and security fields.

The agreement was sealed at a meeting in Amman of the Jordanian-Iraqi Higher Committee chaired by Jordanian Prime Minister Fayez Faisal and his Iraqi counterpart Iyad Allawi.

The projected joint committees cover military affairs, security, trade, transportation, oil, energy, finance, communications, education, health and technology.

The two sides agreed to join hands in securing financing for urgent infrastructure projects in Iraq in addition to rehabilitating border checkpoints and centers, building a highway between the Jordanian port of Aqaba and the Iraqi border, setting up a free trade zone on the frontier and building a Jordanian pipeline to pump Iraqi crude.

Regular meetings by representatives of the two countries' private sectors were also scheduled to boost economic development and cooperation.
