Rally marks 9th anniversary of Rabin death

TEL AVIV, Israel, Oct. 31 (UPI) -- Some 80,000 people attended a memorial rally in Tel Aviv Saturday night to mark nine years since the murder of prime minister Yitzhak Rabin.

Politicians were not invited to speak this year to make the rally appeal to an audience that may have stayed away due to the political nature of past ceremonies, Haaretz Daily reported Sunday.

The crowd at this year's rally was larger than last year's, organizers said.

The slain prime minister's daughter, Dalia Rabin-Pelosoff, made a speech, calling the assassin "no errant weed'" and saying the murder was carried out with planning and support.

Shimon Peres was at the rally, seated behind a reinforced glass partition.

Organizers said that, in light of recent trouble, the slogan for this year's rally was "Yes to Peace, No to Violence," the same slogan used for the rally after which Rabin was killed.
