Serbian court orders arrest of generals

BELGRADE, Serbia, Sept. 30 (UPI) -- A Serbian court has ordered the arrest of four generals wanted by the United Nations court in The Hague on war crimes charges.

The Danas newspaper reported Thursday the four were suspected of war crimes during Serbia's conflict with Kosovo in 1998 and 1999. Police have now received arrest warrants issued by a district court in Belgrade, the paper said.

The United States and the European Union have applied heavy pressure on Serbia to comply with the demands of The Hague tribunal, making such compliance a condition for improved ties with the West. Around 10,000 people died during the Kosovo conflict.

The four generals are: police generals Sreten Lukic and Vlastimir Djordjevic; army general Vladimir Lazarevic; and former chief of staff Nebojsa Pavkovic.

Former Serb President Slobodan Milosevic is currently on trial in The Hague.
