India's Congress Party to honor Gandhis

NEW DELHI, Aug. 20 (UPI) -- India's Congress Party will honor the late former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi and his wife Sonia Saturday at the party's first meeting since its election win.

The party will pass two resolutions, one commemorating Rajiv Gandhi's contributions to the nation as prime minister from 1984-1989, the other recognizing Sonia Gandhi's efforts to return the party to power, the Times of India reported Friday.

Rajiv Gandhi was killed in a bomb attack in 1991. Friday was the 60th anniversary of his birth.

Congress is openly announcing that its convention will be dedicated to the Gandhi family. The couple's children -- son Rahul Gandhi and daughter Priyanka Gandhi Vadra -- will be invited to attend.

The party will acknowledge Rajiv Gandhi's initiatives in devolving power to the grassroots, lowering the voting age to 18, ushering in computer culture and unleashing the telecom revolution.

The resolution on Sonia will recall her role in securing victory in an impossible situation in this year's elections.
