NAACP leader criticizes GOP

PHILADELPHIA, July 12 (UPI) -- NAACP Chairman Julian Bond told the group's annual convention in Philadelphia the Republican Party "(appeals) to the dark underside of American culture."

Bond elaborated on his criticisms of the GOP on the second day of the NAACP's 95th annual convention, telling 8,000 delegates President George Bush's party relies on "the politics of racial division to win elections and gain power," The Philadelphia Inquirer reported.

"If you don't vote because you fear your vote won't count, you're absolutely right -- if you don't vote, you won't count," he said. "You'll be letting the bad guys win. Our response must be determination -- to flood the polls and cast our votes in such large numbers that there will be no doubt."
