Poll: Bush misled Americans

WASHINGTON, July 1 (UPI) -- A majority of Americans believe President Bush deliberately misled his nation to justify invading Iraq, a survey released Thursday indicates.

The latest NBC/Wall Street Journal poll, released four months before the presidential elections, points out most Americans believe their nation is headed in the wrong direction.

But despite their grievances with Bush over the war, many still want to return him to the White House in November, the survey said.

The poll, conducted by Hart/Teeter, indicated 45 percent of registered voters said they would vote for Bush while 44 percent said they support Democrat John Kerry. Independent candidate Ralph Nader gets 4 percent.

As many as 48 percent of respondents said they believe the country is heading in the wrong direction while only 36 percent said it's still on the right track.

As many as 47 percent of registered voters said they believe Bush deliberately misled the people to make his case for war in Iraq, while 44 percent said the information he shared with the nation was accurate.

The poll was conducted Friday through Monday of 1,025 registered voters, and has a margin of error of 3 percentage points.
