New mother slain in Jordan honor killing

AMMAN, Jordan, June 3 (UPI) -- A 35-year-old man in Jordan, in an act of honor killing, gunned down his unmarried cousin in a hospital where the victim had just delivered her baby.

The man later surrendered to police, saying he had acted to "cleanse his family's honor," the BBC reported Thursday.

The report said stunned medical staff watched as the suspect and his two brothers ran into the 25-year-old woman's room and opened fire.

The mother was hit by six bullets, said the Jordan Times. The day-old baby lying next to her was not harmed. The two brothers also reportedly turned themselves in.

The baby, delivered by Caesarean section, was sent to a government social institution.

The main suspect will be charged with premeditated murder and his brothers with being accessories to premeditated murder, the report said.

Jordan Times said it was the third such case of "honor" killing in the country this week, in which a total of nine women were killed.

Jordan's parliament has twice rejected changes in the law to impose harsher punishments for "honor killings".
