CHICAGO, May 25 (UPI) -- Roman Catholic priests in the Archdiocese of Chicago are being instructed to deny holy communion to gay activists wearing rainbow sashes Sunday.
Cardinal Francis George said in a letter to priests that people wearing the sash to signify they are gay or lesbian are expressing their opposition to church teaching and the protesters should not receive communion, WGN-TV, Chicago, said.
A group called the national Rainbow Sash Movement has asked homosexuals to wear the rainbow colored cloth Sunday to proclaim their sexual orientation.
WGN said protesters will attempt to receive communion Sunday despite the cardinal's opposition, but will not physically disrupt church services.
"In wearing the Rainbow Sash, we proclaim that we are gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender (and) with our families, friends and loved ones we witness and celebrate our sexuality as a sacred gift," the movement's Web site says.
