Military memo warned of prison methods

WASHINGTON, May 21 (UPI) -- The Pentagon was sent a letter of caution by senior military lawyers about interrogation techniques at Guantanamo Bay 15 months ago, USA Today reported.

The classified letter warned some tactics used at the prison for al-Qaida suspects in Cuba were outside the Geneva Convention, and warned of potential legal problems.

The judge advocates general were particularly concerned about a proposal to use extremely harsh methods against one detainee suspected of having specific information about a potential attack. Some of the undisclosed methods were approved in that case.

Pentagon spokesman Larry DiRita said Thursday some of the harsh techniques had been used in Guantanamo infrequently from the fall of 2002 until early 2003 in an attempt to get information that could save U.S. lives.

DiRita did not comment on the 3-page memo, but said the Pentagon did adopt a more restrictive interrogation policy in April 2003.
