Southcom says any abuses at Gitmo are mild

MIAMI, May 7 (UPI) -- The U.S. Southern Command in Miami said two cases of detainee abuse at the Guantanamo prison for terrorists are mild compared to those in Iraq.

The abuses at the prison on the island of Cuba involve a guard who hit a prisoner with a radio and another who sprayed a prisoner with water, The Miami Herald reported Friday.

"Overall we're very confident that the procedures we have in Guantanamo ... are consistent with the application of humane treatment, Southcom spokesman Raul Duany said.

The Southern Command operates the prison and the Navy base.

The Navy Inspector General's office arrived at the detention center Thursday review past complaints and procedures.

There have been a total of six complaints including the radio and water incidents. One of the others was cleared by a court-martial and insufficient evidence was found in the other three.
