U.S.: Scope of abuse 'remains to be seen'

WASHINGTON, May 5 (UPI) -- U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell said Wednesday how widespread was the alleged abuse of Iraqi prisoners "remains to be seen."

"It remains to be seen what the total extent of the problem is, and then you start to follow it up the chain of command and the chain of accountability," he told reporters.

Powell added that U.S. military personnel in Iraq had been forthcoming about the alleged abuse of Iraqi prisoners and action had been taken against those found responsible.

"We are a nation that's governed by the rule of law, and nowhere is that more the case than in the armed forces of the United States," he said.

Powell said the revelations about abuse in Abu Gharib prison had led to "a broad review of all of our detention facilities in Baghdad as well as elsewhere." He said facilities in Afghanistan and Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, would be included.
