Wrongly convicted man sues Canada

MONTREAL, May 4 (UPI) -- A man who served a prison term for rape before winning an appeal is suing the Canadian and Quebec governments for millions of dollars.

Michel Dumont says that while he was enduring life in prison, his children suffered abuse in foster care.

The Canadian Broadcasting Corporation reports Dumont said no amount of money can make up for what he and his family suffered.

"It will never replace 14 years since this nightmare began. But it will help us to live normally," he said.

The victim identified Dumont from police photos as the man who raped her at knifepoint. But subsequently she changed her story after his conviction when she spotted a "double."

Police did not alert Dumont's lawyer, who was then preparing an appeal. The Quebec Court of Appeals overturned the conviction in 2001, when Dumont had been out of prison four years.

The suit seeks $8.7 million Canadian or $6.3 million U.S. in compensation from the federal and provincial governments and the city of Boisbriand.
