Cheney renews tough North Korea stand

SEOUL, April 17 (UPI) -- Vice President Dick Cheney has wound up his week-long Asian trip in Seoul where he again urged quick resolution of the North Korean nuclear problem.

He also urged leaders in Japan and South Korea to go ahead with troop deployments in Iraq, the Korea Times reported.

Cheney took a tough stand against North Korea's nuclear programs, warning negotiations cannot be dragged out indefinitely and must begin to show results, given the seriousness of the threat.

Officially, each nation says it supports complete, verifiable and irreversible dismantlement -- but there are important differences. Japan backs the Bush administration's stance, but China and South Korea have wavered. The Chinese, key brokers between the United States and North Korea in the talks, have repeatedly pressed the administration to show greater flexibility.

Before returning to Washington, Cheney addressed U.S. troops serving 35 miles from the demilitarized zone separating the two countries.
