Twins visit Mubarak in Houston

DALLAS, April 15 (UPI) -- Formerly conjoined Egyptian twins were flown from Dallas to Houston on Thursday for a brief meeting with Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak.

Ahmed and Mohamed Ibrahim and an entourage of doctors and family members met with Mubarek for about five minutes at a Houston hotel, WFAA-TV in Dallas reported. The Egyptian leader met this week with President Bush in Crawford.

Mubarek requested the meeting because he wanted to check on the health of the boys who are now national celebrities in Egypt, the station reported.

The twins were accompanied by their parents, older brother, nurse, and Dr. Kenneth Salyer, the craniofacial surgeon who arranged their surgery in Dallas and participated in the 34-hour separation last October.

"We consider these two boys to be ambassadors of peace for the globe," the surgeon told WFAA-TV.

The boys, who were joined at the crowns of their heads, are now living in a Dallas apartment with their parents. They will undergo skull reconstruction later this year before returning to their homeland.
