U.S. knew about no Iraqi WMD by July 3

NEW YORK, April 5 (UPI) -- U.S. officials knew months before they told Congress or the public that there were no weapons of mass destruction in Iraq, reported Vanity Fair magazine.

David Kay, the man charged with looking for Saddam Hussein's alleged stockpiles of biological and chemical weapons told the magazine that he warned officials in Washington that there were no weapons to be found as far back as July 2003.

The magazine says in its May edition that top Bush officials told him, "We have to be very careful how we handle this."

It was months before the administration told Congress they no longer expected to find significant caches of weapons.

The Bush administration pushed for war with Iraq on the basis that Saddam refused to relinquish his biological and chemical weapons.
