New trial requested for Martha Stewart

NEW YORK, March 31 (UPI) -- Martha Stewart's lawyers Wednesday filed for a new trial in New York, saying a juror in the first trial gave incorrect information about his background.

The former chairwoman and chief executive of Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia was convicted March 5 of lying to government officials about her 2001 sale of shares of ImClone Systems.

Her lawyers, in their request for a new trial, argue juror Chappell Hartridge did not reveal that he had been arrested and arraigned for assault in 1997, the New York Times reported.

Stewart is to be sentenced June 17. Her former stockbroker, Peter Bacanovic, was also convicted of lying.

A lawyer for Bacanovic said he would be joining with Stewart's attorneys in seeking a new trial.
