Stoiber: deport German terror suspects

MUNICH, Germany, March 17 (UPI) -- German opposition party leader Edmund Stoiber said foreigners suspected of terrorism should be deported immediately.

Stoiber, who was the opposition candidate for chancellor in 2002, said discussion of deportation and other potential security measures must be part of the debate over coming changes to German immigration law, German newspaper Die Welt reports.

Stoiber cited terror attacks in Spain as evidence security concerns should be a focus for German politicians.

Representatives of other parties disagreed, accusing Stoiber of playing politics with legitimate fears resulting from the attacks.

Stoiber and his Christian Socialist party have also renewed his calls for a constitutional amendment to allow the German military to protect domestic targets against terrorism.

Political opponents accused him of hypocrisy, saying he has cut police budgets in his home state of Bavaria.
