Yemen journalists slam colleague's arrest

SANAA, Yemen, March 6 (UPI) -- Yemeni journalists protested Saturday against the arrest of a colleague over the publication of news that the president's son was shot in an armed attack.

A statement by the journalists' syndicate said Said Thabet Said was arrested by Yemeni intelligence on Friday when he walked out of a mosque after prayers.

No official charges were filed against him, but his arrest appears to be related to the article he published concerning alleged attempts on the life of Ahmed Saleh, elder son of President Ali Abdullah Saleh and the commander of Yemen's special forces.

"The syndicate's council denounces the illegal measure against Said Thabet Said and urges the authorities to release him immediately," the statement said.

It urged the government to honor the constitution and laws guaranteeing human rights and public freedoms, especially the freedom of expression and opinion.
