CHANDIGARH, India, Feb. 18 (UPI) -- At least six Tibetan activists were detained by police in north India for protesting against a visit by a Chinese official delegation.
Police in Chandigarh city detained at least six Tibetans following a stormy demonstration against Chinese education officials. Scores of other protesters were cane charged.
Police officials claimed that protesters pelted stones. The protesters called for freedom of Tibet and an end to repression of Tibetans under Chinese rule.
The Chinese delegation, from the education department of Jiangsu province, was led by its deputy director-general Ge Gaolin and is visiting educational institutions in northern India.
Last year, Tibetan students in Chandigarh jostled the Chinese ambassador to India.
India is home to more than 300,000 Tibetans and the Tibetan spiritual leader the Dalai Lama, who has his government-in-exile in Dharamsala.
