Ferry hits cargo ship off Sweden

STOCKHOLM, Sweden, Feb. 16 (UPI) -- A Swedish car and passenger ferry was under tow and in danger of sinking Monday after striking a Jamaican cargo vessel off the Swedish coast.

There were no injuries, but more than 100 people were evacuated from the ferry to a boat that was nearby, the BBC reported.

The Stena Nautica was en route from Denmark to the Swedish port of Varberg with 91 passengers and 37 crew aboard when it collided with the Jamaican-registered cargo ship Joanna.

A tug was being used to take the ferry to shallower waters outside Varberg, which is 295 miles southwest of Stockholm.

"It's uncertain if it will stand the tow very much longer," said Sea Rescue spokesman Magnus Gustafsson. "But now it is in shallower waters and if it sinks it will rest on the bottom."

The Joanna was able to continue to its Falkenberg, Sweden, destination.
