Church of England softens on gay marriage

LONDON, Feb. 12 (UPI) -- Senior clerics of the Church of England have indicated gay marriage is not out of the question in the future, The Times of London reported Thursday.

The General Synod met to review a report titled "Some Issues in Human Sexuality," and voted to officially "take note" of it, meaning it will be discussed further.

The church's current policy of banning same-sex marriages among clergy was established in 1991. There are some rare exceptions made for such marriages among lay people.

The Bishop of Oxford, Richard Harries said the new report did not set out to change the position but was a guide to the debate. Harries said while the church might decide in the future to take a stricter approach, it might also opt for a "more inclusive one," which he said would lead to the introduction of services of blessing same-sex couples.

After the debate, Harries said there had been a fundamental change in the church's mood and predicted that change was now inevitable.
