Charles set for Diana police interview

LONDON, Jan. 8 (UPI) -- Aides to Britain's Prince Charles say he is ready to be interviewed by Scotland Yard about the death of his wife Princess Diana.

Charles is reportedly eager to co-operate with the inquiry, ordered by the royal coroner, to help to dispel the myths that have sprung up around his former wife's death, the Times of London said Thursday. He would be questioned about a letter said to have been written by the princess in October 1996, 10 months before her death, in which she speculated he was plotting her death in a faked car crash.

A Clarence House spokesman emphasized the prince and his aides "come from the position of trying to be helpful" to the police during the reinvestigation.

It remains unclear whether Scotland Yard expects to unearth any significant piece of information which has not already been established by the inquiry led by Herve Stephan, a French examining magistrate. Stephan concluded after a 17-month inquiry Diana and Fayed died with their driver, Henri Paul, because Paul was driving at high speed while under the influence of alcohol and drugs.
