Bush meets with NASCAR drivers

WASHINGTON, Dec. 2 (UPI) -- President Bush welcomed NASCAR drivers, including 2003 NASCAR champion Matt Kenseth, to the White House Tuesday.

In ceremonies on the South Lawn, Bush received a racing jacket from Kenseth and the president looked over NASCAR vehicles parked near the White House.

Bush addressed the drivers, several crew members and NASCAR officials, saying that racing is a team sport. He also noted charity work done by the drivers and their crews.

Kenseth, 31, of Cambridge, Wis., claimed his first NASCAR Winston Cup series title this season, which included a victory at the race in Las Vegas.

Several other NASCAR drivers, including past series champions Tony Stewart, Bill Elliott, Jeff Gordon and Bobby and Terry Labonte, participated in the White House ceremonies.

So-called NASCAR dads are considered the "soccer moms" of the 2004 election, an important swing group of voters.
