Billions flowing from U.S. to Lat. Am.

WASHINGTON, Nov. 24 (UPI) -- The six million immigrants in the United States from Latin America now make up the world's largest source of remittance to countries of origin.

The Pew Hispanic Center says its surveys indicated Latin American-bound remittances from the United States will total nearly $30 billion this year.

Pew said interviews with 12,000 people in the western hemisphere indicate those who receive the funds in Latin America include 19 percent of all Mexican adults, 14 percent of all Ecuadoran adults and 28 percent of all Salvadoran adults -- with most recipients being women.

Pew says money flow in remittances between the United States and Latin America is the world's largest.

About 42 percent of all adult, foreign-born U.S. Latinos, or some six million people, regularly send money to their families living in their countries of origin.

About half of all immigrants who have been in the United States 10 or fewer years send money back to their country of origin; about 23 percent of immigrants living in the United States 20-to-30 years send money to their families.
