John Hinckley Jr. seeks more freedom

WASHINGTON, Nov. 16 (UPI) -- Lawyers for the man who shot President Reagan in 1981 will be in federal court Monday seeking more freedom for their client.

John Hinckley Jr. wants to take unsupervised day trips to his parents' house in Williamsburg, Va., and stay overnight with them, CNN reported Sunday.

Federal prosecutors argued in a pre-hearing memorandum last week that Hinckley cannot be trusted and would represent a danger to the community.

A jury in 1982 found Hinckley not guilty by reason of insanity of attempting to assassinate Reagan and wounding a Secret Service agent and presidential spokesman James Brady. He has since been institutionalized at St. Elizabeth's Hospital in Washington.

Hinckley has been allowed to leave the hospital, but always accompanied by hospital staff.

The Justice Department is expected to call two psychiatrists to bolster its case against the visits while the defense plans to call two experts who treated Hinckley and will say he does not pose a danger.
