Annan starts making U.N. security changes

UNITED NATIONS, Nov. 3 (UPI) -- U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan said Monday he has started making changes even as he continues to study security reforms suggested by a recent study.

Asked about the timing of changes in the wake of the Aug. 19 bombing of U.N. headquarters in Baghdad, which killed 22 people, Annan said, "We are going to take measures to protect our staff, particularly in those situations which we consider high vulnerability."

He said, "We are going through the details, trying to find out exactly who did what, who didn't do what, and we are going to be making some changes."

Reports Monday said U.N. Security Coordinator Tun Myat has resigned and his role temporarily assumed by Undersecretary General For Management Catherine Bertini.

A spokesman for Annan refused to deny or confirm the report and Myat's office did not return calls from United Press International late Monday evening.
