Paterno team huddles on congressional bid

WASHINGTON, Oct. 27 (UPI) -- Republican Scott Paterno is reportedly considering a race for Congress from Pennsylvania's 17th Congressional District.

Sources in Pennsylvania say Paterno, the son of legendary Penn State football coach Joe Paterno, may enter the crowded field of Republican candidates who are hoping to take on Democrat U.S. Rep. Tim Holden.

Holden, currently in his sixth term, was re-elected in 2002 with just 51 percent of the vote. He ousted former Republican U.S. Rep George Gekas after the two veteran legislators were placed in the same seat by the post-2000 congressional redistricting.

In spite of Holden's narrow win, the seat is strongly Republican. In the 2003 presidential election, George W. Bush defeated former Vice President Al Gore 56 percent to 41 percent.
