Spiked doughnuts could mean expulsions

KENTWOOD, Mich., June 15 (UPI) -- Three high school students accused of giving laxative-spiked doughnuts to fellow students and a teacher may be expelled from school, officials said.

The two sophomores and junior from the Grand Rapids suburb of Kentwood may face expulsions of 180 days when the next school year begins, The Grand Rapids Press reported.

The Kentwood School Board is expected to act on the matter during its July 14 meeting, the Press said.

Three students became nauseous and a physical education teacher went to the hospital after eating the tainted doughnuts on May 23.

The teacher said the substance burned his palate, leading him to conclude it was a suppository, rather than oral laxative.

Investigators are awaiting lab results on the doughnuts, authorities said.

The students allegedly handed out the doughnuts in a school hallway. The teacher and three other students who ate the doughnuts became sick about 15 minutes later, the Press said.
