LOS ANGELES, June 28 (UPI) -- On the day that his legendary coach passed away, former Chicago Bears linebacker Mike Singletary got a new job.

Singletary, who drove the Bears' 1985 defensive unit to the Super Bowl, will serve as a defensive advisor for the Los Angeles Rams. Singletary, 57, announced his new role Tuesday on Chicago's 670 The Score.

The Hall of Famer played alongside Rams coach Jeff Fisher from 1981 to 1985 in Chicago in Buddy Ryan's vaunted '46 defense.' Ryan died Tuesday.

Singletary held an 18-22 record in three seasons as head coach of the San Francisco 49ers. He began that tenure in the middle of the 2008 season and was fired after 15 games during the 2010 season. He served as linebackers coach for the Baltimore Ravens before landing in San Francisco as an assistant head coach and linebackers coach. He joined the Minnesota Vikings in 2011, where he served as assistant head coach and linebackers coach until 2013.
