Murray already out at Australian Open

MELBOURNE, Jan. 14 (UPI) -- Ninth-seeded Andy Murray, very strong in one set, was upset in four sets Monday in first-round play of the Australian Open.

Murray was already down two sets before he won the third at 6-0. But lost a fourth-set tiebreaker and was ousted by Jo-Wilfried Tsonga 7-5, 6-4, 0-6, 7-6 (7-5). It was Tsonga's second ever Australian Open match while Murray had made it to the fourth round of last year's Australian Open.

Play began Monday in the year's first Grand Slam event and Murray was the highest-seeded player to drop a match but 16th-seeded Carlos Moya also exited, losing 7-6 (7-5), 6-7 (2-7), 7-5, 7-4 to Stefan Koubek and No. 18 Juan Ignacio Chela was upset 6-4, 6-2, 1-6, 6-2 by Guillermo Garcia-Lopez.

World No. 2 Rafael Nadal seemed to a have a little trouble finding his game but still ended with a straight-set 7-6 (7-3), 7-5, 6-1 win over Viktor Troicki; fourth-seeded Nikolay Davydenko defeated Michael Llodra 7-5, 7-5, 6-3; and sixth-seeded Andy Roddick claimed a straight-set win over Lukas Dlouhy 6-3, 6-4, 7-5 in two of the highlighted matches on the men's side.

Eighth-seeded Richard Gasquet beat Nick Lindahl 6-0, 6-1, 3-6, 6-2 but No. 11-seed Tommy Robredo needed to rally back from two sets down and a third-set tiebreaker to survive a scare from Mischa Zverev, 4-6, 2-6, 7-6 (7-2), 6-4, 7-5. He advances to a second-round match against Mardy Fish, who was a four-set winner over Boris Pashanski.

Fourteenth-seeded Mikhail Youzhny defeated Mathieu Montcourt 6-0, 6-2, 7-6 (7-3); No. 24-seeded Jarkko Nieminen and 28th-seeded Gilles Simon each were pushed to five sets before making it out of the first round. Other seeded players who advanced Monday were No. 20 Ivo Karlovic; No. 23 Paul-Henri Mathieu; 26th-seeded Stanislas Wawrinka; No. 29 Philipp Kohlschreiber; and No. 31 Igor Andreev.

Nadal next goes against Florent Serra, who was a 6-3, 7-6 (7-2), 7-6 (7-5) victor over Florian Mayer. Davydenko has a second-round appointment with Nicolas Mahut while Roddick next plays Michael Berrer.
