Semifinals set at U.S. Open

NEW YORK, Sept. 6 (UPI) -- David Ferrer and Novak Djokovic posted three-set triumphs Thursday to set up a semifinal meeting at the U.S. Open.

Ferrer, who ousted Rafael Nadal in the previous round, stormed past Juan Ignacio Chela, 6-2, 6-3, 7-5. Djokovic reached his third straight Grand Slam semifinal by ousting Carlos Moya, 6-4, 7-6 (9-7), 6-1.

Those were the only singles matches played Thursday, as the final major championship of the year nears its completion.

The women's semifinals will be held Friday when Svetlana Kuznetsova plays Anna Chakvetadze and Justine Henin meets Venus Williams in a highly anticipated match.

In addition to the Ferrer-Djokovic semifinal on Saturday, Roger Federer will take on Nikolay Davydenko. Federer is seeking his 12th major title and his fourth straight U.S. Open crown.

The mixed doubles championship was decided Thursday, when Victoria Azarenka and Max Mirnyi defeated Meghann Shaughnessy and Leander Paes, 6-4, 7-6 (8-6).
