OAKLAND, Calif., May 30 (UPI) -- Mike Wood and three other Texas pitchers combined for nine scoreless innings and Sammy Sosa notched two RBI Tuesday, as the Texas Rangers halted a six-game skid with a 4-0 win over the Oakland Athletics.
Wood (1-1) allowed five hits and issued five walks in five innings but escaped without giving up a run. He struck out three for the Rangers. C.J. Wilson, Joaquin Benoit and closer Eric Gagne allowed a total of four hits over the final four innings.
Marlon Byrd finished with three hits and an RBI in the victory, and the Rangers also got a run when Mark Teixeira scored on a fielding error by Shannon Stewart.
Lenny DiNardo (1-2) suffered the loss after he allowed four runs -- only one of which was earned -- with three strikeouts for Oakland. Stewart and Marco Scutaro both collected two hits in the losing effort. Oakland has dropped three of its last four games overall.
The game was scoreless until the Rangers produced four runs in the sixth inning.
