Rain halts men's U.S. Open play

NEW YORK, Sept. 5 (UPI) -- Roger Federer will have to wait until Wednesday to try to extend his run at the U.S. Open after rain halted tennis Tuesday.

The top-seeded Swiss was to play Frenchman Marc Gicquel in a night match Tuesday, but rain halted play early in the afternoon and persistent showers canceled the evening session.

Federer, who is the two-time defending champion, will be third on court Wednesday afternoon. The Swiss, an eight-time Grand Slam champ which includes Wimbledon and Australian Open titles this season, is 58-1 in his last 59 North American hard court matches.

Two fourth-round matches started Tuesday before the rain. Seventh-seeded Russian Nikolay Davydenko led Andy Murray of Great Britain, 6-1, 5-7, 6-3. Russian Marat Safin, the 2000 U.S. Open winner, was ahead of Tommy Haas of Germany, 2-1.

Fifth-seeded American James Blake meets Czech Tomas Berdych in the other fourth-round match Wednesday.
