LONDON, Dec. 9 (UPI) -- Kate Middleton paid tribute to Princess Diana by wearing a special accessory.

The 33-year-old Duchess of Cambridge wore her late mother-in-law's famous Lover's Knot tiara to the annual Diplomatic Reception Tuesday at Buckingham Palace. Middleton was accompanied to the event by husband Prince William, the elder of Princess Diana's sons.

The diamond and pearl headpiece was commissioned by Mary of Teck in 1914 and passed to her granddaughter, Queen Elizabeth II. The English monarch gave the piece to Princess Diana on her wedding day to Prince Charles in 1981.

Middleton has worn a tiara just three times before -- including the Lotus Flower tiara she wore to the 2013 Diplomatic Reception. Princess Diana returned the Lover's Knot after her divorce from Prince Charles, and it has not been worn since.

The duchess stepped out the next day with a shorter haircut at the annual ICAP Charity Day. She and Prince William, who share 2-year-old Prince George and 7-month-old Princess Charlotte, helped to raise funds for several organizations, including the Children's Cancer Institute.
