LOS ANGELES, Aug. 31 (UPI) -- From Miley Cyrus' revealing outfits to Justin Bieber crying on stage, this year's MTV Video Music Awards were full of shocking and jaw-dropping moments, as the biggest names in music celebrated pop culture at the Microsoft theater in Los Angeles, Calif., on Sunday evening.

One of the most unexpected and talked about moments involved a verbal spat between host Miley Cyrus and Best Hip-Hop Video award winner Nicki Minaj. The Anaconda singer wrapped up her acceptance speech by calling out Cyrus for alleged comments she made on Thursday to the New York Times. Cyrus mentioned in that interview how Minaj could have better handled her brief Twitter feud with Taylor Swift saying "What I read sounded very Nicki Minaj, which, if you know Nicki Minaj, is not too kind."

Minaj took those comments personally when she attacked Cyrus onstage saying "Back to this [expletive] that had a lot to say about me the other day in the press. Miley Cyrus, what's good?"

Cyrus responded back defensively "We're all in this industry. We all do interviews. We all know how they manipulate [expletive. Nicki, congratulations." Minaj could then be seen mouthing expletives towards Cyrus again.

The incident came about after Minaj and Swift seemingly squashed any beef they had by taking the stage together for an opening ceremony duet. Minaj's sexy performance of Trini dem Girls echoed carnival in the Carribean with Minaj, Swift and her back-up dancers all sporting bright red, flashy outfits.

Another singer who turned up the heat while appearing cool and collected was Demi Lovato, who rocked the stage with Iggy Azalea and performed her new single Cool for the Summer where she donned a dominatrix-style leotard.

Justin Bieber also left the crowd speechless during his emotional performance of Where Are U Now and his new single What Do You Mean?. Bieber showcased some impressive falsetto dance moves and ended his set hunched over on his knees breathing heavily as tears ran down his face. A redeeming moment for the once troubled pop-star.

Some other notable performances of the evening included The Weekend's Can't Feel My Face and Macklemore & Ryan Lewis performing Downtown.

As usual, Cyrus showed off some skin in a plethora of surprising outfits. The Wrecking Ball singer did not disappoint showcasing nine different ensembles throughout the show including a polka dotted jumpsuit, a flashy mirrored one-piece and one raunchy outfit that covered the star's chest with cartoon looking eyes.

Cyrus closed out the award show with a drag queen filled performance of her own and even announced a brand-new mixtape entitled Miley Cyrus & Her Dead Petz currently available for free.

This year's Video Music Awards also featured an obligatory Kanye West rant complete with the rapper declaring that he wold be running for president in 2020.
