LOS ANGELES, Oct. 10 (UPI) -- Nick Cannon says his "Mariah" coverup tattoo is unfinished.

The 34-year-old actor had wife Mariah Carey's first name emblazoned in ink across his back, but covered up the piece with a large religious tattoo after the couple separated. Cannon was spotted leaving the gym shirtless over the weekend, and told Extra he didn't intend for people to see the coverup.

"It's not finished yet," he related. "It wasn't supposed to be revealed yet... I had just gotten it done; it was painful... It hurt a lot and I'm still not finished, I'm still probably like six more sessions away."

Cannon and Carey married in April 2008, and welcomed fraternal twins Monroe and Moroccan in April 2011. News of the couple's split broke in August, and the actor later confirmed he and the singer had broken up some months before. Cannon said he wishes his ex "nothing but the best."

"I'm just taking everything one day at a time," he shared. "And just being the best person that I can possibly be at the end of the day."
