Prince William to serve in RAF, Royal Navy

LONDON, Oct. 10 (UPI) -- England's Prince William reportedly plans to learn how to fly in the Royal Air Force before getting his sea legs with the Royal Navy.

The 25-year-old prince will be trained in flying helicopters and fixed-wing aircraft while on attachment to the RAF following completion of his time with the Household Cavalry Regiment, The Times of London said Wednesday. The four-month stint is set to begin in January, The Telegraph added.

He will then serve four months with the Royal Navy to gain an understanding of life on submarines and surface ships.

"(Prince William's) time with the RAF will ... allow him to realize a lifetime ambition to learn to fly. He will be able to share the working lives of airmen and sailors," a royal spokesman said.

Prince William completed training at the Royal Military Academy at Sandhurst in December 2006. He spent the past year with the Blues and Royals, one of the two senior regiments that form the Household Cavalry, which guard his grandmother, the queen, The Times noted.

His father Prince Charles, grandfather Prince Philip and uncle Prince Andrew all qualified as pilots with the RAF.
