First British rock hall of famers inducted

LONDON, Nov. 12 (UPI) -- Robbie Williams, Michael Jackson, The Rolling Stones, Queen and Cliff Richard were selected as the first inductees into Britain's Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

The ceremony was held Thursday at the Hackney Empire in east London, with the event attracting a who's who of musical celebrities, including U2, Madonna and the Stones' Ron Wood, Britain's Guardian reported Friday.

Britain's Channel 4 viewers voted for the inaugural inductees -- one for the past five decades -- with Williams collecting 1.6 million votes to win the 1990s decade category over REM and Nirvana.

Organizers selected five founding members: Madonna, U2, the Beatles, Bob Marley and Elvis. Island Records founder Chris Blackwell, who introduced reggae to Britain, also received a trophy.

Britain's Hall of Fame officials hope its hallmark award will become as famous as the U.S. version, which has a museum in Cleveland. Britain currently has no building in which to honor its recipients.

The ceremony will air Sunday on Channel 4.
