J.R. Ewing now promoting organ donation

FORT WORTH, Texas, Sept. 16 (UPI) -- Actor Larry Hagman, best known for his role as J.R. Ewing on "Dallas," is advising people to "recycle yourself" by becoming an organ donor.

"Dallas" marks its 25th anniversary on television -- currently in cable reruns on SoapNet -- and Hagman, a native of Fort Worth, Texas, is taking the opportunity to promote organ donation.

"Why not give somebody your organs?" he asks. "You're not going to use them. Seven lives can be saved."

If that doesn't convince people, he tries a more J.R. Ewing approach, the Fort Worth (Texas) Star-Telegram reports.

"I always ask, 'Would you want to receive an organ if you needed one?'"

The answer is always yes, he said. "Then -- you'd better be willing to give," Hagman says.

After overcoming alcohol abuse Hagman was saved by a liver transplant.

Hagman, age 72, lives in California with his wife of 49 years, Maj.
