South Korea accuses contractors of falsifying test results

SEOUL, Nov. 11 (UPI) -- The acquisition watchdog of the South Korean military says 34 local contractors have fabricated test results of parts and materials for military equipment.

The Defense Agency for Technology and Quality said the fabricated test results did not seriously damage or affect military equipment, but it plans to recall all items in question to have them replaced with genuine products. It will also demand that the contractors pay for them, according to a report in the Korea Times newspaper.

The suppliers involved are also likely to face investigation and banning from future military contract bidding.

The report on the fabrication of test results was released by the agency following inspection of 136,844 items provided by parts manufacturers over the past three years. Some of the items failed to meet the military's required standards.

Systems affected by the fabrication of test data include the Surion helicopter and K-9 self-propelled howitzer.

In one instance, a supplier for the K-1 armored recovery vehicle fabricated test results 57 times, while a parts supplier for the K-9 howitzer fabricated nine documents, the newspaper quoted the agency as saying
