MARLBOROUGH, Mass., June 13 (UPI) -- Raytheon reports it has received a $19 million contract to modify the U.S. Navy's multi-band terminal system for polar communications.

The modification will link the system to the U.S. Air Force's Enhanced Polar Satellite to enable the services to overcome communications gaps in the polar region.

"This increased capability will give the Navy more mission flexibility and significantly increased capacity to provide protected voice, data and video communications supporting strategic and tactical missions," said Scott Whatmough, vice president of Integrated Communication Systems for Raytheon's Network Centric Systems business.

Raytheon said it has started modifications to Navy NMT terminals aboard ships and on shore.

The Enhanced Polar Satellite program uses XDR waveforms for higher rates of data transfer and will be compatible with technology already on the drawing boards.
