Upgraded C-5A introduced to Air Force

MARIETTA, Ga., Sept. 18 (UPI) -- Lockheed Martin has introduced the first of an upgraded C-5A Galaxy transport aircraft to the U.S. Air Force as part of the Avionics Modernization Program.

U.S. company Lockheed Martin is under contract to upgrade 111 of the Air Force's C-5 strategic heavy airlift aircraft under the C-5 Avionics Modernization Program. Officials say the aircraft upgrade program includes replacing analog cockpit instruments with new digital technologies, among other advances.

Lockheed Martin on Thursday introduced the first upgraded C-5 to the Air Force.

"The combination of hardware and software afforded through Avionics Modernization Program allows Air Force crews to fly unrestricted anywhere in the world," George Shultz, Lockheed Martin C-5 Modernization vice president, said in a statement.

"Modernizing the C-5As today with new avionics further ensures this unique national asset will continue to support the war fighter for many years to come."
