Aussies pessimistic on terror war

SYDNEY, Aug. 28 (UPI) -- Three-quarters of Australians in a recent poll think the war against terrorism is being lost, and more than half expect Australia to be attacked within a year.

The poll by The Daily Telegraph also showed that a majority of those questioned believe Western countries will still be fighting terrorism 20 years from now.

The newspaper said Monday the results were based on face-to-face interviews with 572 people a week earlier in the cities of Sydney and Newcastle, in the Australian Capital Territory and in rural New South Wales.

Additional details on the polling methodology were not disclosed.

According to The Daily Telegraph more than half of those questioned agreed the threat from al-Qaida and other terror groups would get worse in the next few years.

A majority of the 572 people questioned favored stricter airport security as well as passenger profiling.
