Singing fish scares off would-be burglar

Fishing store owner glad he neglected the guard dog and mounted a singing fish on his wall instead.

ROCHESTER, Minn., Feb. 6 (UPI) -- That annoying singing fish known as Big Mouth Billy Bass -- who stalks the dry walls of man caves and dorm rooms around the country -- may have saved a store owner in Rochester, Minn., several thousand dollars by scaring off a would-be intruder with its obnoxious rendition of the Talking Heads' classic "Take Me To The River."

Tom Allen, who owns a tackle shop called Hooked on Fishing, came to open his store earlier this week only to find the door kicked in and Mr. Billy Bass lying motionless on the floor. Nothing, according to Allen, was stolen. He quickly figured out why.

"When I saw Billy Bass on the floor I knew something was really up," Allen told local news station KTTC. "And when I tried to close the door and it wouldn't close at all I just knew that Billy Bass had done his job, and let somebody know that it wasn't just empty or something."

Allen and the police surmise that the fish, which hangs near the front door and starts singing when it detects motion, must have startled the burglars upon their entrance, moving them to cut their crime spree short and flee the scene.

Though the door was damaged to the tune of $700, Allen feels lucky. He says he had a significant amount of cash just lying out in the open.
