Nelson Mandela's $4.1M estate revealed

PRETORIA, South Africa, Feb. 3 (UPI) -- South African former President and anti-apartheid hero Nelson Mandela's last will and testament was made public on Monday.

In the 22-page document that was originated October 12, 2004, the former president bequeathed an estimated $4.14 million estate to his family, named staff members, the African National Congress, and various educational institutions.

Mandela, who was married three times, left portions of the estate to his children and grandchildren. Graca Machel, to whom he was married at the time of his death, is entitled to half of his estate. According to executor and Deputy Chief Justice Dikgang Moseneke, Machel waived her claim to the estate.

Staff who were named in the will included Zelda Le Grane, former private secretary to Mandela.

A percentage of the royalties left to the Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela Family Trust will go to the African National Congress.

Mandela dedicated nearly $9,000 in educational scholarship money to four institutions he had attended and another $9,000 to schools in towns where he used to live.

The will was made public Monday at the Nelson Mandela Center of Memory in Johannesburg at the invitation of the estate's executors.

Nelson Mandela passed away at the ago of 95 on December 5, 2013.
