Mandela grandson charged with attacking teacher in car crash

JOHANNESBURG, South Africa, Jan. 16 (UPI) -- Mandla Mandela, grandson of the late South African leader Nelson Mandela, was charged with assault Thursday in a case stemming from an auto collision last year.

In an appearance in Mthatha Regional Court in Eastern Cape province, the younger Mandela was charged with assault with intent to do grievously bodily harm and pointing a firearm, the South African Broadcasting Corp. reported.

Prosecutors accused Mandela of assaulting a 44-year-old teacher in October who had allegedly bumped a car driven by one of Mandela's business associates. In an ensuing argument, Mandela allegedly manhandled the teacher and pointed a gun at him.

The judge delayed action on the case after Mandela's attorney said they had not received the charges until Thursday and needed more time to prepare their case.

The next hearing is set for Feb. 24.
