Clay Aiken considering running for congress

Clay Aiken is putting the wheels in motion to make a bid for Congress.

The American Idol alum, who came out as gay in 2008, has become increasingly outspoken on political issues, particularly concerning LGBT rights and helping children with disabilities.

Now, sources say he is quietly, but actively considering running for North Carolina's 2nd congressional district, currently occupied by Republican Rep. Renee Elmers, which includes Aiken's native Raleigh.

Aiken is "sounding and acting like a candidate," a source, who spoke on condition of anonymity said, adding that the 35-year-old singer has made phone calls, spoken to the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee and has met with key people in Raleigh. He is also said to be working with Betsy Conti, a political strategist who counts former N.C. Gov. Bev Purdue and presidential nominee Al Gore among her clients.

The singer was also reportedly in Washington, D.C., last month meeting with Hart Research Associates pollsters.

February 28 is the filing deadline to participate in the May 6 primary. So far, no one has officially announced a run against Ellmers, but former state Commerce Secretary Keith Crisco is expected to announce his candidacy Monday.
