American filmmaker Timothy Tracy, who was arrested in Caracas for allegedly being involved in a plot against the Venezuelan government, was released and expelled from the country, the minister of interior and justice announced Wednesday.
El Universal reports that Venezuela's Miguel Rodriguez Torres broke the news in a tweet.
"The gringo Timothy Hallet Tracy, caught spying in our country, has been expelled from the national territory," he wrote.
Tracy was arrested a few days after the elections held on April 14. He allegedly traveled to Venezuela to shoot a documentary about the country's political divide.
At the time of the arrest Chavista President Nicolas Maduro accused Tracy of being involved with violent groups.
"I gave the order that he be detained immediately and passed over to the attorney general's office," he said.
