July 8 (UPI) -- At least nine people were killed in Kenya on Saturday during an attack blamed on Somali militant group al-Shabab.

Police said the nine victims were beheaded, according to the Standard, in the attack that took place near the village of Jima in Lamu County along the Somali border.

"Nine people were killed, some were shot dead and others hacked," a police officer told Capitol FM radio.

Security officials were sent to the scene to pursue the attackers, as more people in the area remained unaccounted for.

"There was an attack in the area and we are still pursuing the attackers. We will give more information later," Head of operations for Operation Linda Boni, James ole Seriani, said.

President Uhuru Kenyatta mentioned the incident on Saturday morning and said details would be provided at a later time.

"We have had an unfortunate incident this morning which we are assessing," the president said. "There shall be no vacuum in securing our country."

The attack took place near Pandaguo, where al-Shabab militants attacked and killed three police officers earlier this week.
